Jamie Foxx Makes First Public Appearance After Hospitalization: ‘I Went Through Hell and Back’

Introduction

Jamie Foxx had a triumphant return to the spotlight on Monday night, when he received the Vanguard Award by the Critics Choice Association at their Celebration of Cinema & Television: Honoring Black. The award, presented by his friend and collaborator Kerry Washington, recognized his outstanding achievements and contributions to the entertainment industry.

Foxx, who looked dapper in a black suit and a white shirt, took the stage and delivered an emotional and humorous speech, thanking his family, friends, fans, and colleagues for their support and prayers during his difficult time. He also expressed his gratitude for being alive and able to walk, after being hospitalized earlier this year for a “medical complication” that he did not disclose.

“I want to thank God for giving me another chance to live. I want to thank my sister Deidra Dixon and my daughter Corinne Foxx for saving my life. They were there with me every step of the way, and they never gave up on me. I love you both so much,” he said, as the audience applauded.

He continued, “I also want to thank all the doctors and nurses who took care of me, and all the people who sent me messages of love and encouragement. You have no idea how much that meant to me. I appreciate you all from the bottom of my heart.”

Foxx then revealed that he went through “hell and back” and that he wouldn’t wish what he went through on his worst enemy. He did not give any details about his health problem, but he hinted that it was serious and life-threatening.

“I don’t want to get into the specifics, because it’s too painful to talk about. But let me tell you something, I went through hell and back. I saw things that I can’t unsee. I felt things that I can’t unfelt. I wouldn’t wish what I went through on my worst enemy. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life,” he said, as the audience gasped.

He added, “But I’m here. I’m alive. I’m walking. I’m talking. I’m laughing. I’m smiling. I’m living. And I’m not taking anything for granted. I’m cherishing every moment I have, because I know how precious life is. And I know how quickly it can be taken away from you.”

Foxx then lightened the mood by cracking some jokes and making fun of himself and his situation. He said he was glad to be back in action, and that he was looking forward to continuing his career and making people laugh. He also thanked the Critics Choice Association for honoring him with the Vanguard Award, and said he was humbled and honored to receive it.

“I want to thank the Critics Choice Association for this amazing award. This means so much to me, especially after what I’ve been through. You guys are awesome. You always show me love and respect, and I appreciate that. You make me feel like I’m doing something right in this crazy business,” he said, as the audience cheered.

He concluded, “I want to dedicate this award to all the people who are going through something right now. Whether it’s physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual. Whatever it is, don’t give up. Don’t lose hope. Don’t lose faith. Don’t lose yourself. You are stronger than you think. You are more powerful than you know. You are a survivor. You are a warrior. You are a vanguard. And you are not alone. We are here with you. We are here for you. And we love you. Thank you and God bless.”

Jamie Foxx’s Hospitalization and Recovery

Jamie Foxx’s hospitalization came as a shock to his fans and the entertainment industry, as he was in the middle of filming Back in Action, a Netflix comedy with Cameron Diaz, in Atlanta. The movie, directed by Tim Story, is about a retired cop and a former thief who team up to stop a crime boss from taking over the city.

According to sources, Foxx collapsed on the set on April 15, 2023, and was rushed to the hospital. His daughter Corinne, who was also in Atlanta with him, released a statement on his Instagram, saying he had a “medical complication” and asking for privacy and prayers.

“Hi everyone, this is Corinne Foxx. I’m writing this on behalf of my dad, who is currently in the hospital. He had a medical complication while filming his new movie, and he is in a stable but critical condition. We don’t know much more at this point, but we are hoping and praying for his recovery. We appreciate all the love and support you have shown him over the years, and we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you,” she wrote.

The statement did not reveal the nature of Foxx’s medical complication, but some reports speculated that it could be related to his heart, as he had previously revealed that he had a hole in his heart since birth. However, neither Foxx nor his representatives confirmed or denied these rumors.

Foxx remained in the hospital for several weeks, and his fans and colleagues sent him messages of hope and encouragement on social media. Some of his famous friends, such as Will Smith, Oprah Winfrey, Kevin Hart, and Dwayne Johnson, also visited him in the hospital and shared photos and videos of their interactions with him.

Foxx’s condition gradually improved, and he was discharged from the hospital on May 10, 2023. He returned to his home in Los Angeles, where he continued his recovery process with the help of his sister Deidra Dixon and his daughter Corinne, who stayed with him and took care of him.

Foxx updated his fans on his progress on his Instagram, where he thanked his sister and his daughter for saving his life, and said he was starting to feel like himself again. He also thanked his fans for their support and prayers, and said he was grateful for their love.

“Hey everyone, it’s Jamie Foxx. I just wanted to say thank you for all the love and prayers you have sent me during this tough time. You have no idea how much it means to me. You are the best fans in the world, and I love you all. I also want to thank my sister Deidra and my daughter Corinne for being my angels and my heroes. They saved my life, and I owe them everything. They have been with me every step of the way, and they have given me the strength and the courage to fight and to heal. I love you both so much, and I’m so proud of you. I’m feeling much better now, and I’m starting to feel like myself again. I’m not 100% yet, but I’m getting there. I’m working hard to get back in shape and to get back to work. I miss making you laugh, and I can’t wait to do it again. I have some exciting projects coming up, and I’m looking forward to sharing them with you. But for now, I’m just focusing on my health and my family, and enjoying every moment I have. Life is precious, and I’m not taking it for granted. Thank you and God bless,” he wrote.
